Insurance & Liability Reminder

Most commercial gym liability policies require CPR/AED certification for all staff working the floor. AED placement may be required by state law — staff must be trained on the specific unit installed. Without current certification, your insurance claim could be denied in a cardiac emergency.

Personal Trainer CPR Requirement in Illinois: What Gyms and Fitness Facilities Must Know

While not a hard state mandate, CPR/AED certification for gym staff is effectively required by insurance carriers, industry standards, and member expectations.

📋 Insurance Requirement

Most commercial gym liability policies require CPR/AED certification for all staff on the floor. Without it, claims from cardiac events may be denied.

🫀 AED Training

If your facility has an AED (many are required to), staff must be trained on the specific unit. We include AED training in every CPR session.

📊 The Risk Is Real

Approximately 383,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the US. Gyms and fitness centers are among the most common locations for exercise-induced cardiac events.

💼 Certification Bodies

ACSM, NASM, ACE, and most personal training certifications require current CPR as a prerequisite. Expired CPR means expired training cert.

🔄 Renewal

Every 2 years. Schedule as a team during a slow period — January or early morning before members arrive.

💰 Price Sensitivity Note

This segment is price-sensitive. Our flat rate of $360 for up to 9 staff is competitive with sending individuals to community classes at $50–70 each.

Personal Trainer CPR Requirements: What ACSM, NASM, ACE, and Illinois AED Law Require

Major personal training certifying bodies — ACSM, NASM, ACE, NSCA — all require current CPR/AED certification as a condition of maintaining your credential. A lapsed CPR card means a lapsed training certification. No certification means you cannot legally represent yourself as a certified personal trainer in Illinois.

Illinois AED Law (410 ILCS 4): Fitness facilities in Illinois must have AEDs on-site and must have staff trained in their use. Failure to have trained staff present during operating hours creates liability exposure that most facility insurance policies will contest. Training is cheap; defending an injury claim is not.

Facility insurance requirements: Most commercial general liability policies for fitness facilities include a requirement that all personal trainers and group fitness instructors maintain current CPR/AED certification. An incident involving an untrained trainer can void the policy's coverage for that claim. Verify your policy language — many owners discover this only after an event.

Group fitness instructors and front desk staff: Anyone who could be first on scene — including front desk staff who open or close alone — should hold a current AHA certification. The few hundred dollars it costs to train your whole team is trivial compared to the exposure of an uncovered claim.
