OSHA Compliance Reminder

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.50 requires that when there is no infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace, a person trained in first aid must be available at the job site. Additionally, Illinois requires OSHA 10-hour training for all workers on public works projects.

Illinois Construction First Aid Training Requirements: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.50 Explained

OSHA construction standards require first aid capability on every job site. Illinois adds OSHA 10 for public works. Here's what you need to stay compliant.

📋 First Aid Requirement

When no hospital or clinic is in near proximity, at least one person trained in first aid must be available at the job site. OSHA doesn't define "near proximity" precisely — most interpret it as 3-4 minutes response time.

🏗️ Illinois Public Works

Illinois requires OSHA 10-hour training for all workers on public works projects. This is separate from first aid/CPR but we offer both. OSHA 10 does not expire but is recommended to refresh every 5 years.

🔄 Renewal

First Aid/CPR certifications renew every 2 years. OSHA 10 has no formal expiration but many general contractors require a card issued within the last 5 years.

⚠️ Enforcement

OSHA can inspect any job site, triggered by complaints, accidents, or targeted industry campaigns. First aid violations are typically cited as serious violations with penalties starting at $16,131.

📍 On-Site Training

We train at your office, shop, or job site trailer. Before shift or during safety meetings — no need to send workers off-site and lose a day of production.

✅ GC Requirements

Many general contractors require subcontractors to provide proof of first aid training before allowing workers on site. Having current cards wins bids and avoids delays.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.50: What Illinois Construction Companies Must Understand

OSHA's construction standard 29 CFR 1926.50 requires that "in the absence of an infirmary, clinic, hospital, or physician that is reasonably accessible in terms of time and distance," at least one person trained in first aid must be present on every job site. On large sites or sites more than 3–4 minutes from emergency services, multiple trained responders are required.

Illinois Public Works OSHA 10: Illinois law (820 ILCS 270) requires all workers on state-funded public works projects to have completed OSHA 10-hour training. Many GCs extend this requirement to include current First Aid/CPR certification as a condition of employment. A lapsed card can pull a worker off a bid-eligible project.

Documentation matters: OSHA inspectors may ask to see employee training records, including certification expiration dates. AHA Heartsaver cards are the industry-accepted credential. Cards expire every two years — set a calendar reminder or let us send your crew a renewal reminder.

Subcontractor risk: GCs are liable for subcontractor OSHA violations under multi-employer worksite rules. If a sub's crew is untrained and an incident occurs, the GC may share citation liability. Training your whole site — not just your direct employees — is risk management, not just compliance.

Construction First Aid Training FAQ

OSHA requires at least one trained person available at the site when no hospital is nearby. However, many companies train all workers for redundancy — and many GCs require it for site access. At our flat rate, there's no marginal cost to train the whole crew.
No. OSHA 10 covers general safety awareness (fall protection, electrical, scaffolding, etc.) and is required for Illinois public works projects. First Aid/CPR is a separate certification focused on emergency response. Most construction workers need both.
Yes. We need a covered area (job trailer, break room, or shop) with enough space for your crew to practice hands-on skills. We bring all equipment including manikins and AED trainers.
Heartsaver First Aid + CPR/AED runs about 3-4 hours. We can split it across two mornings if needed. Most crews prefer a single session before a shift starts.
