Online-Only BLS Does NOT Meet Illinois Requirements

The Illinois Dental Practice Act requires a hands-on skills component. If your team used an online-only course, they may not be compliant for license renewal. AHA BLS with in-person skills check satisfies the requirement.

Illinois Dental BLS Requirements: What the Law Demands

Every dental professional in Illinois must maintain current BLS certification with a hands-on skills check. No exceptions, no substitutes.

🦷

Who Must Certify

All dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants. Every clinical team member — no exceptions. Non-clinical staff recommended but not required.

📋

What's Required

Healthcare Provider BLS (not Heartsaver) with a hands-on practical skills component. Online cognitive portion is fine — but must include in-person skills check.

🔄

Renewal & CE Credits

Every 3 years, tied to your license renewal. BLS training counts toward 4 CE credits of the 48-hour continuing education requirement. DANB accepts AHA certification.

Why Dental Practices Choose On-Site Training

Your staff don't leave the office. Your patients don't get rescheduled. We handle everything.

Led by Joyce Lewis-Van Hook, RN — 40+ Years of Clinical Excellence

When compliance is non-negotiable, experience matters. Joyce brings four decades of nursing expertise and 20+ years as an AHA-certified instructor to every dental session.

Clinical Background

With 40+ years as a Registered Nurse, Joyce understands the emergencies that happen in dental chairs — from vasovagal syncope to angina to anaphylaxis. She doesn't teach from a script — she teaches from four decades of clinical experience responding to real patient emergencies.

Unlike large certification mills that cycle hundreds of students through assembly-line classes, The Pulse Place keeps groups small (max 9 per session) so every dental team member gets hands-on practice time with real-time feedback from a clinician who has been there.

Why Dental Teams Trust Joyce

  • ✓ AHA-certified instructor for 20+ years
  • ✓ Registered Nurse with active Illinois license
  • ✓ Trained dental teams across Chicago south suburbs
  • ✓ Deepest pediatric course lineup in the area (4 courses vs competitors' 1-2)
  • ✓ Chicago south suburbs / 708 area — local, not a franchise

Understanding BLS Requirements for Illinois Dental Offices

The Illinois Dental Practice Act (225 ILCS 25) is unambiguous: every dentist, dental hygienist, and dental assistant must maintain current BLS certification with a hands-on skills component. This is not a recommendation — it is a licensure requirement enforced by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

What many practices discover too late is that online-only CPR courses do not satisfy this requirement. A fully online course with no in-person skills check will not be accepted during license renewal. The Act specifically requires demonstration of physical skills — chest compressions, rescue breathing, and AED operation performed in person under instructor supervision.

Non-compliance carries serious consequences. An expired or invalid BLS certification can result in delayed license renewal, disciplinary investigation, or conditional licensure status. In a civil liability context, a dental emergency resulting in patient harm where staff lacked valid BLS training is a significant exposure. Illinois plaintiffs' attorneys routinely request BLS certification records in dental malpractice discovery.

The Illinois Dental Practice Act ties BLS certification to the 3-year license renewal cycle and allows BLS training to count toward 4 of the 48 CE credit hours required for renewal. The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) also accepts AHA certification for CDA credential maintenance.

The Pulse Place delivers AHA Healthcare Provider BLS — the specific level required by IDFPR — on-site at your practice, before or after patient hours, with same-day eCards that are immediately reportable to your CE tracking system. One two-hour morning session, your entire team compliant, zero patient disruption.

Dental BLS Certification FAQ

The Illinois Dental Practice Act requires BLS for all dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants — essentially anyone with patient contact. Front desk and administrative staff are not required by law, but many practices certify everyone for safety and liability reasons.
Dental professionals need Healthcare Provider BLS — not Heartsaver. BLS covers advanced skills like team-based resuscitation and bag-mask ventilation that are appropriate for clinical settings. This is what the state board and DANB require.
Only if it included an in-person, hands-on skills check. The Illinois Dental Practice Act requires practical skills demonstration — online cognitive training alone does not satisfy the requirement. AHA's blended learning (online + skills session) is accepted. Fully online with no hands-on component is not.
BLS training counts toward 4 of the 48 CE credit hours required for dental license renewal in Illinois. We provide documentation you can submit to your CE tracking system. DANB also accepts AHA BLS for CDA renewal.
We can run back-to-back sessions at the same flat rate per session, or bring a second instructor for simultaneous training. For 10–18 staff, this means either two consecutive 2-hour sessions or one combined session with two instructors. Contact us for a custom quote.
Yes. All participants receive AHA eCards the same day they complete the course. eCards are the official AHA certification format — they're accepted by IDFPR, DANB, and all Illinois licensing bodies. You can print or download them immediately.
